Chairs and Responsibilities


General Responsibilities:

1.  To become familiar with and serve the members of FGCN in their area of interest.

2.  To provide information to the membership about their area of interest through news articles to the Nebraska Garden News on a regular basis.

3.  To provide programs or ideas for programs to the membership about their area of interest if applicable.

4.  If applicable to communicate with the regional and national chairs in their area.

5.  To receive and review award applications in their area.  They may also inform the membership about awards in their area as needed.

6.  To report to the membership annually about their area of interest whether orally, written and/or visually (poster).

7.  To serve on the FGCN Board and attend fall and spring meetings.



Awards & Youth Awards Chairman


The Awards Chairman coorrdinates with appropriate chairmen and prepares the Awards which are presented at the State Annual Meeting.  The chair will become familiar with all awards, state, regional and national and inform the membership of these awards.

Backyard Wildlife Habitat

This chair will share ideas and information on creating habitats that invite all kinds of nature to your backyard.  It can be a home for butterflies, songbirds and more.  Plus reduce rainfall runoff to improve water quality and lower energy costs.

Bird Chairman

The State Bird Chairman encourages the club members to have lessons on birds at each meeting.  Programs focus on identification, habits, and wefare of birds and the preservation of their environment.  The chairman provides program information if requested, compiles lists of sanctuaries, encourages members to create a sanctuary in their own yard, works with National Audubon Society and endangered species agencies in compiling bird counts, and has bird food recipes available.

Blue Star Chairman

The Blue Star Memorial Highway program was adopted in 1945.  The memorial was established to honor American servicemen and women.  The Blue Star clhairman functions as the liaison between the State Highway Department and garden clubs interested in establishing a memorial marker site.  A Blue star memorial markers guidelines book is available from NGC, Inc. office.  This chair will document and keep a record of all Blue Star Memorial markers in Nebraska.

Book Review Chairman

The Book Chairman reads books, writes reviews and sends reviews to the Nebraska Garden News Editor for publication.

Butterfly Chairman

The Butterfly Chairman is instrumental in involving the public, awakening curiosity and talents of adults and youth to the plight and value of butterflies.  The chair should become familiar with avialable educational resources and make them available as appropriate to the membership.  The chair may conduct a photo contest to enhance learning.  The chair should encourage projects to create butterfly gardens that provide habitat and nutritional needs of migrating butterflies.

Civic Development Chairman

The Civic Development Chairman inspires garden clubs to participate in beautification and environmental civic projects.  A major goal is to attain greater recognition for all garden club projects, including youth sponsored endeavors.

This chairman informs members of environmental concerns and energy saving ideas.

Flower Show Awards Chairman

The Flower Show Awards chairman receives books of evidence from garden clubs holding Standard Flower Shows, scoring 95% or above.  The books are checked for correctness and the evaluation sheets forms the Flower Show Judges are attached.  Show scoring 95% or above by the judges are forwarded to the State Awards Chairman to be submitted for NGC, Inc. Flower Show Achievement Awards.  The evaluation sheets are not shown to the club holding the flower Show.  The flower Show Awards Chairman has the evauation sheets available on request by the show chairman.  These should be given to the Judges at the time of judging.

Flower Show Schedule Chairman

Clubs planning a Flower Show submits the schedule to the schedule chairman.  The Flower Show Schedule Chairman can be of great value in evaluating and editing a schedule before it is published.  She/He reviews the schedule to see that it conforms and meets all requirements for Flower Show Achievement Award.

Flower Show Judges Council

This Chairman is President of the Flower Show Judges in Neebraska.  This group meets at Symposium and at the FGCN State Annual Meeting.

Food Gardening Chairman

This Chairman encourages food gardening because it has brought beauty to many spots, fresh food to the table, given exercise to the body, peace to the mind and soul and contributes to the environment.  The goal is to get all members involved in man's oldest occupation...gardening.

Gardening Therapy Chairman

Garden and Horticultural Therapy is the process of using plants & horticulture to improve the social, education, psychological and physical adjustment of an individual, thus improving his/her body, mind and spirit.  Garden activities aid in the recovery and rehabilitation of the physically challenged, also for mental and emotional health.   She or he also encurages ech garden club member to perform a simple act of kindness to someone in need such as flowers or vegetables from their garden.  The chair will also assist member garden clubs participation in building and supporting "E
NABLING GARDENS.

Horticulture Chairman

This Chairman informs the membership about a wide variety of topics appropriate for the season about the planting and care of all types of plants from turf to insects and diseases.  Pests and plant diseases are also addressed.

Indoor Gardening

This chair encourages and informs the membership of indoor gardening opportunities and benefits.

Life Membership Chairman

This chair receives requests for state life membership, prepares membership cards, and coordinates the recognition of new state life members at the State Annual Meeting.  The chair is responsible for maintaining a permanent record of state life memberships.  State Life Memberships support the FGCN State Symposium/Schools Fund.  This chair also receives applications for National Life Membership and sends the applications to the National Garden Clubs National Life Membership Chair.  New National Life Members are also recognized at the State Annual Meeting.

Membership Chairman

The three regional members of this area of interest work with the FGCN leadership to promote new members of FGCN and to help establish new clubs.

Native Plants & Wildflowers Chairman

This chair encourages the membership to plant natives.  The chair should become familiar with agencies and other resources that need the support to plant natives.

NGC School & Youth Education Chairman

This chair is responsible for encouraging public school gardens and the membership to include youth in their projects.  This chair also informs the membership about Smokey Bear/Woodsy Owl poster contest, poetry contest, high school essay contest and youth sculpture contest.  The chair receives club entries each year.  The chair sends winners to the appropriate national chair.  State winners in eavh category are recognized at each FGCN State Annual Meeting.

National Garden Clubs, Inc. Schools

This chair will oganize and set up Landscape Design School, Gardening Study School and Environmental Studies School in Nebraska as requsted by Federated of Nebraska Garden Clubs.

Nebraska Garden News Circulation Chairman

This chair is reponsible for recording the addresses of FGCN members to receive the Nebraksa Garden News whether the NGN is received by e-mail or postal mail.  The chair prepares the address labels for the NGN to end to the editor and is responsible for the distriution of the NGN by e-mail.

This chair will inform the membership of different pollinators and how to encourage their presence in our gardens.

Scholarship - Honor & Memorial Chairman

This chair keeps a permanent record of donations in honor or in memory to the FGCN Scholarship Fund which gives scholarships to Nebraksa College of Technical Agriculture and the University of Nebraska Horticulture students.  Notes are sent to the honor members and memorial cards are sent to the bereaved families.  The chair will regularly inform the membership of these donations.

Protocol Chairman

This chair is responsible for the protocol of State Annual Meetings.  The chair will work for State Annual Meeting chairman and/or other members and FGCN leadership to make sure the meetings and dinners run efficiently and that the proper sequence in seating arrangements are achieved.  This chair provides place cards and proper seating arrangements at meal tables.  The chair oversees receiving lines at state meetings.  The chair sends note informing each person of the seating plan for state meeetings.

Recycle Chairman

This chair informs the membership of recycling and reusing.  The chair should encourage members to begin to expand recycling programs in their communities.

RMR Award of Excellence

This chair becomes informed about the regional award and shares information about the award to FGCN members during the first year of the RMR director's term.  The chair encourages club participation and receives information from the FGCN clubs about their participation in the program and prepares a Book of Evidence to submit to the RMR Award of Excellence Chair.

This chair is responsible for the selection of UNL Horticulture students applying for the National Garden Clubs Scholarship and also recognizes FGCN Scholarship winners presented to students of Nebraska colleges with Horticulture or related programs.

This chair receives scrapbooks submitted for state and regional awards and makes recommendations to the Awards Chair.

Social Media

This chair is responsible for promoting the FGCN through social media (Facebook) and through assisting garden clubs in setting up their own club pages an brochures.

Trees and Landscape

This chiar is to create an awareness of the benefits of good landscape design to improve the quality of life and to promote sponsorship and attendance at Landscape Design courses.  This chair will also encourage tree planting as Nebraska is the home of Arobor Day.  Education in the form of species, care, proper planting procedures should be available for garden club members.

This chair informs the membership about water issues that affect the environment of all Nebraskans.

Ways & Means Chairman

This chair along with FGCN leadership determines fund raising activities for FGCN and helps coordinate the activities for the State Annual Meeting such as the auction and other FGCN events.  This chair sits on the Finance Committee of FGCN.

This chair is responsible for the FGCN website and assisting garden clubs in setting up their own sebsites.

Yearbook Chairman

This chair receives club yearbooks submitted for state, reional and national awards and makes recommendations to the Awards Chair.  This chair encourages clubs to submit yearbooks for awards and outlines appropriate information for yearbooks.
