83rd Annual Meeting

The Western District extends a hearty invitation to come and have a glorious time in Ogallala, Nebraska.  "Where all Trails Meet."

Friday, April 7, 2017, travel to and lunch at Haythorn Ranch.  A video of family history will be presented.


We will visit the Little Church at Keystone.  It was built in a pioneer town that was too small for two churches, Catholic and Protestant.

The two denominations use the same  church building which is a monument to religious harmony and cooperation.  Little Church is thought to be the only church in the world with both Protestant and Catholic alters.

The Water Interpretive Center at Lake McConaughy provides two 20 minute videos, exhibits to tour and interactive educational exhibits on the Platte River and High Plains Aquifer.

The Petrified Wood Gallery is a showcase of natural history specializing in ancient woods and fossils from around the world plus Native American arrowheads and artifacts, many from within 24 miles of Ogallala.  The collection is a result of the efforts of brothers, Howard and Harvey Kenfield, who began collecting in the 1950s.

The Cowboy Poet, Dave Knight, will entertain playing guitar, singing and story telling.

During the breaks, Yoga will be offered by Dorsie Farrar for those who need to stretch.

Tomas England will present the history of the Ogallala Trails.

Four program sessions will be offered to members and the public.  The public will pay a $10.00 charge for all four sessions.  The sessions are as follow:  1) Kim Soper will speak on prairie plants the Native Americans used;  2) Rendale Meyer's topic will be "Home Produced Sugar;"  3) Jon Holzfaster, Nebraska Corn Board will give a "show and tell" presentation concerning the different items made from corn plus information and stats about corn; and  4) Vance Nelson's presentation, "Menus at the Forts," will enlighten the group on how gardening determined what meals were served to the cavalry at Fort Robinson.

A Ways and Means table will be open through-out the meeting for people to buy and take the item with them.  A Silent Auction table will be open to bid through-out the meeting.  Winners to be announced between 4:30 - 5:00 p. m. or when the workshops are over.

And let us not forget the wonderful banquets with delious food.

The Federated Garden Clubs of Nebraska, Inc,  and the Nebraska Judges Council will present a small standard flower show, "Celebrate Spring" during the FGCN Annual Meeting.  Horticulture and Design classes will be available to enter.  All design classes must be registered so appropriate space will be available.  To access a  flower show schedule, please place your cursor over the picture and press.  growing sunflower
